Avira anti virus protection doesn't work.. AVG online scanner browser hijacker?

IT friggin slowed down my computer and wouldn't let me open the internet. like a million warning popup things telling me that they found suspicious thread blah blah came up. So I had to delete it. Luckily it let me open up add/remove programs. So my problem is with pop ups coming up well they are like new internet pages that come up idk I think it may be a virus /spyware. anyone recomend any anti virus thats free? There was also a weird message coming up saying there could be suspicious virus/threats blah blah click yes or cancel I clicked cancel but the pop up wouldn't go away so I had to restart my computer what is with that? I read somewhere that AVG online scanner is not really a scanner at all its a fake website or w/e so I am not downloading AVG so don't recomend that. is the AVG online scanner the same thing as the antivirus program? here is the site saying its harmful or what not.

dont do avg online scan go on google and type in trend micro housecall it will scan your computer for free it takes like an hour and a half, but it works
