I need a scanner that provides the following:

--Allows me to name the file easily from the scanner or software

--Respects the integrity of old documents i.e keeps them in tact and scans well

--I need to be able to tell it how many pages each document will have

--and lastly I need it to scan directly to the folder I want it to....

any input is much appreciated.

Take a look at a Plustek PS286+. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/730032-REG/Plustek_PS286PLUS_SmartOffice_PS286_Plus_Document.html

It will do all of the stuff you require.

most folks use scanner software that is provided. that has always been an issue with me.

I can rarely get a good copy with that software

I use photofiltre, or irfanview or any type of picture enhancing program, wherein most of them work

I use the twain part of edit, ... i select the installed scanner, I copy and save to a bmp file. that preserves the sort of quality you asked about. I have used a number of scanners and they all seem to be able to do what you seek.

I just bought an old one on Craigslist for 10 dollars that does not need a power cord but just plugged into my USB port. That works as well.

Most office photocopiers will do this. Watch for one at an auction, or bankruptcy sale.
