when i scan papers/documents from my printer to my computer it seems as if the file sizes are massive (10 MB for just one regular paper). how/what should the default file type for scanning be? TIFF, JPEG, BMP, etc. etc? I just want to scan and email documents...nothing fancy.
Thanks!

if you are using Windows, use the SCANNER & CAMERA WIZARD installed with windows. Dont use the software bundled with your scanner coz those are usually complicated when it comes to the filesize issues

ok, so in SCANNER WIZARD,

1. choose the option "grayscale pictures"

2. then adjust the pixel size to 100-150 (up to you. 100 is ok already)

3. adjust the contrast to make the document clearer

4. It would help to click on the "preview" button first rather than "Scan" coz by previewing first, you can choose the exact area of the paper that you want to scan. The lesser area scanned, the smaller the filesize

5. save your file as JPEG.

this step would produce a filesize averaging 50-100kb. A whole letter-size document would be around 100kb only.

hope that helped

That's a bit vague, you have to tell us what the name of the program is that you are scanning with so people who know that program can help you better.

For the time being don't select BMP output files but JPG or PNG instead, BMP is the largest filetype of the three.

If the documents are black and white, during the process of prescanning, if you can select Acrobat files PDF select that and set it to black and white scan. Those should be really small, even if you scan five pages or so.

Leave BMP alone, that is for graphics.

If your documents have color and you want color, PDF will do color too, but the file sizes will be a bit larger, maybe around 1 meg to one or two pages. Again, you can always fudge around with the DPI settings, if they are set really high, like 600, bring it down to about 150-200, that should be readable.

The format you need is JPG. Lower your scan resolution to about 150 x 150. Also...have a look at this free program to convert your documents to PDF format, which is more widely used with documents than any of the image formats. The people receiving your documents will be able to view and print them more easily in PDF.

After you've installed the PDF converter you can go to the normal print function and choose CutePDF as you printer. It will then "print" to a PDF file rather than to paper.
