My Epson stylus CX4800 "won't connect" to Epson scan?

I just connected my epson stylus CX4800 to my (fujitsu; windows XP) laptop but when I use the driver for it's that comes with it it says the scanner is not connected. Eventually, I had tried to download drivers from online. Once or twice I used the one that was the same as the original driver but it reacted the same way. I thought it really was an issue with the usb connection but when I used vuescan it had worked completely fine. I didn't like the ugly watermark all over the place on my drawings saying "Buy VueScan now!" obviously since I wanted to use it for my drawings to put up on my art blog. Photoshopping the watermarks off took forever over my multi-color marker art. Now, because I know the scanner(/printer/copier) is completely connected what can I do about the driver?

Also the printer part works perfectly fine, if that may help.

I believe if you download the latest version of Vuescan and use it in the Guide Me mode it will let you use the dumb mode without watermarks. To use any of the advanced features you need to buy the software. I say I believe because I own the software and can't test that out.

Uninstall VueScan

Uninstall the drivers for your Epson Stylus CX4800.

Restart your computer

Go to this site and download and install the latest drivers:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=58606&prodoid=56291067

There is a troubleshooting link on that site and the manual.
