Why cant i hear police talk on my scanner all i hear is dispatcher talk?

I have a GRE PSR-410 scanner and i can hear dispatch talking to the deputies but i cant hear the deputies talking to dispatch? what do i have to do to hear the deputies talk?

Their radios use a "repeater", a radio link high on a hill/tower. This means they talk on one frequency (to the repeater), and all listen on a different frequency (from the repeater). Your scanner has to listen to two frequencies, or find the repeater output frequency (where you can hear everything). You seem to be listening to the dispatcher sending to the repeater, and unless there is a deputy close by, you will never hear them - you would only hear them on the repeater output...

Just to confirm, Adrian has it exactly correct. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Adrian were an Amateur Radio operator (Ham) or perhaps just an avid scanner fan. I myself am a Ham, and we use repeaters all the time.



The principle is exactly as described. A repeater helps extend your signal range and get you beyond obstacles (like a hill). It receives your signal and simultaneously retransmits it. Since it cannot send and receive on a single frequency at the same time, it receives on one frequency (the input) and transmits on another (output).



As Adrian said, you obviously within range of the dispatcher (who is using a powerful "base station" to call the repeater) but hearing that transmission on the input frequency. The deputies are also using that frequency, but since they are using weaker "mobile" equipment you cannot hear them unless they are close and in a direct line-of-sight path from your scanner. I sometimes have the opposite problem. I live close to two interstates and I can often hear the State Police on input but cannot hear the dispatcher. Find the output frequency of the repeater and you should be golden.

NO...you don't need two frequency's to LISTEN on a repeater system since both the control station and the mobile are returning on the same frequency...All you need is the repeater frequency in your scanner...more than likely the mobile signals are too weak into the system and can not be heard on your scanner or they have moved to a Trunked / P-25 digital system where they may be encrypted..Some of these new systems support both analog and digital so you may not hear but only one side of the conversation...Also bear in mind all the police cars now support a computer system where there is direct communication between the 911 dispatcher and the patrol car not to mention cell service!
