I need to scan some paper on our HP printer/scanner. How can I do that without installing the HP program?

You can add the scanner using the Scanners and Cameras wizard in your control panel. It will activate the scanner if it has the correct generic driver.

Assuming your computer has all the right drivers to run a scan...I like Irfanview. It's a free art program and you can scan through it, not to mention do all kinds of other photo-tweaking stuff with it. Download Irfanview & the irfanview plug-ins, install (takes a minute), go to File-->Aquire/Batch Scanning (first select Twain Source if you have other gizmos attached to your machine, like cameras, etc.), and it should be able to run your scanning program if everything else is working ok. If that isn't the case and the scanner doesn't have an external scanner button, then you might have to install at least some of the HP stuff.

You just need to install the drivers for the scanner and then you can scan without the hp program.

You must have to install the driver. Otherwise you won't be able to connect your scanner with your computer.
