No adding an amp that goes to 1GHz will NOT add reception abilities to your scanner.
The scanner is limited to the bands its is designed to handle, and in your case thats 406 to 512MHz.
There would need to be additional circuitry added in the receiver to handle above 512MHz., and its MORE than a firmware upgrade. as the 72XLT is not a DSP based radio.
If you wishing to receive 800MHz then you will need to get a scanner capable of receiving 800MHz, additionally since 90% of the 800MHz area is trunked you will need a scanner which receives the various trunking protocols, Motorola, EDACS, or LTR.
Check your area to make sure you do not need a digital capable scanner as this is an option and a much higher priced radio that will be required.

Adding an amp ***SOMETIMES** can help to improve weak reception. It also CAN IMPAIR good reception due to overload of the radio. It all depends on what is nearby, the signals your trying to receive to start, antenna(s), coax cable to the antenna
A good outside antenna and good coax can at times work BETTER than an amp.
