Question:
Why does a communication error message appear when I try to scan using a HP officejet 4300?

When I insert the original into the document feeder and press scan, the error message: 'Unable to communicate with HP Scanning software. Please verify that it has been installed and is working properly. If this problem persists, please shut down your application and try again.' I have already tried as it said and have uninstalled and reinstalled the software. Why is it still saying this and what can I do to fix it?

What you need to do is remove the USB cable from the scanner and power the unit on.

Now , begin a fresh install and re-connect the USB cable only when the software tells you.... NOT before....

Let it finish the setup. REBOOT the computer and windows will find the scanner.

Start the scanning software. Go under FILE menu and select SCAN. It will work right away :)

For me what worked was to go into Printers and Scanners in my System Preferences (I have a Macbook Pro). Then I chose SCAN and set a few preferences, such as the type of document I want to scan to (PDF, jpg, etc.) Then I hit SCAN and the document started to feed into the scanner. No more problems. So in other words, I fixed this by talking to my software, not by fooling with buttons on the HP Officejet.
